Turkish Hammam Etiquette for First-Time Visitors
The quiet conventions of a traditional Turkish bath — how to move, how to pour water, and how to share the göbek taşı with other guests.

Etiquette in a Turkish hammam is quiet, unspoken and easy to learn. The pestemal is worn at all times in shared spaces. Voices stay low. The bathing pace is unhurried.
At the kurna, the marble basin, water is drawn with a copper bowl and poured slowly. The basin is shared, so take your time and leave room around it.
The göbek taşı is the central heated platform, and it is there for lying still and warming up. Others share it too, so leave them room and move calmly.
Above all, the hammam rewards patience. Let the building set the tempo, and the visit ends the way the tradition intends.
