20 min. Traditional Scrub (Kese)

A special natural-fibre kese gently removes dead skin, reveals fresh skin underneath and supports circulation. This cleansing technique has been part of Turkish hammam culture for centuries.

20 min. Traditional Foam Wash

Pure olive-oil soap is turned into rich foam with a traditional cloth bag, then applied gently across the body. After the scrub, the soft foam soothes the newly refreshed skin.

Cappadocia Clay Face Mask

01What is a traditional Turkish hammam?

A hammam is a bathing house built around a central heated marble platform, surrounded by domed chambers, arches and small alcoves with marble basins. The rhythm of the visit — warmth, water, rest — is one of the oldest bathing traditions in Anatolia.

02Do I need to bring anything?

A pestemal (woven cotton wrap) is provided. Guests typically wear swimwear or comfortable underwear beneath the pestemal. Personal toiletries are optional.

03Is the hammam suitable for couples and families?

Yes. Private bathing alcoves and considered scheduling allow couples and families to share the experience while respecting the traditional separation of the bathing chambers.

04How do I reserve a visit?

05Is the hammam a medical or therapeutic treatment?

An introduction

Eight Centuries Beneath the Same Stone.

According to the hammam's local history, the building dates to 1202 — a period associated with the reign of Seljuk Sultan Alaaddin Keykubat. Its story is not one of sudden splendour but of quiet continuity: chambers warmed, water drawn, and stone polished by centuries of visitors.

The hammam's own account records a later interruption — a period of flooding followed by closure — before an Ottoman-period restoration in 1726 returned the building to active use. Today it stands as one of the few Turkish baths in Cappadocia with a documented history reaching back so far.

The traditional Turkish hammam is an architectural rhythm as much as a bathing tradition. The visit moves through the building the way the building itself is arranged.

Architecture

Stone, symmetry and the discipline of light.

The bathing hall is organised around a single heated marble platform — the göbek taşı — set beneath a dome whose small openings admit shafts of natural light. Around it, arches open onto private bathing alcoves fed by marble basins.

The building's stone belongs to Cappadocia: worked to a warm, even surface, quiet in its detail, and shaped by centuries of heat and water rather than any single decorative programme.

The old water well.

Beneath the property lies an old water well. According to the hammam's local history, the well is bound up with stories of the site's long relationship to water and with folk traditions of healing that are shared across many of the region's older stone buildings.

These stories belong to the cultural memory of Avanos. They are offered here as folklore rather than as medical claims — a way of understanding what a place has meant to the people around it, across a very long time.

Avanos sits on the north side of the Kızılırmak, the longest river entirely within Türkiye. It is a town of red clay, stone streets and slow evenings — a quieter register than the more famous valleys to its south.
